9-1-1 in Montgomery County
In 1984, the Texas Legislature created “The Emergency Telephone Number Act”, thereby allowing individual counties to form 9-1-1 “Districts” upon voter approval. Local governmental, and private sector leaders promoted the idea of having one number for emergencies; and in November, 1985, the voters of Montgomery county approved, by an 81% margin, the District formation and installation of 9-1-1.
The adoption of the 9-1-1 proposal allows Montgomery County residents to reach emergency aid by dialing one agency, instead of the 51 different emergency numbers which were in use in Montgomery County at that time.
On January 19, 1988, a fully enhanced 9-1-1 system was turned on. This unique system, only the third of its type in the entire state of Texas, replaced more than 50 published 7-digit telephone numbers for police, fire and ambulance assistance. For a county with two Area Codes, 35 phone prefixes and 5 different telephone companies, the installation process was quite a challenge. The end result, the ability for citizens to remember only 3-digits from any area in the county to summon help, has reduced the response time in getting emergency responders to the required location.
